U-Boot-Pilot
Kate Wawatai
Kate Wawatai is a pioneering deep-sea submersible pilot, maritime professional, and cultural ambassador from Aotearoa New Zealand. A member of The Explorers Club and the only woman to pilot a submersible beyond 10,000 meters, she operates at the edge of human exploration, helping scientists uncover the mysteries of the deep ocean.
With a background that spans military service, commercial maritime operations, and technical diving, Kate brings a uniquely interdisciplinary perspective to every expedition. Her expertise lies not only in submersible operations, but also in fostering strong safety cultures, developing operational training systems, and mentoring the next generation of explorers.
Kate is passionate about storytelling and science communication. As a Maori woman working at the frontier of exploration, she weaves cultural knowledge and lived experience into her work, whether diving into the hadal depths or standing on stage. She regularly speaks to young people, using the wonder of exploration to inspire hope and resilience.
Having operated in extreme environments around the world—from the depths of the Pacific to the icy waters of Antarctica—Kate is especially excited to explore the Arctic region. Her deep respect for nature's extremes and her interest in Indigenous knowledge systems make her a powerful guide for this voyage to the Geographic North Pole and East Greenland.
