Auf einer Fläche, die ungefähr einem Drittel der Größe Frankreichs entspricht, gehört Kimberley zu den letzten unberührten Gebieten der Welt.
Der Hunter River in einem der malerischsten Teile der Region bietet Gelegenheit zur Beobachtung von Salzwasserkrokodilen in den wilden Mangrovenwäldern und einer vielfältigen Vogelwelt.
Den unbestrittenen Höhepunkt dieser Kreuzfahrt bildet die Entdeckung des King George Rivers und dessen Wasserfällen, den höchsten Wasserfällen der Kimberley-Region.
Sie besuchen auch die Collier Bay, wo Sie die ausgedehnten Lagunen und riesigen Korallenbänke des Montgomery-Riffs bewundern können.

Ausflüge, Anlandungen und Zodiac-Ausflüge sind abhängig von Wetterverhältnissen, dem Wind sowie dem Wellengang. Die Wetterverhältnisse können jederzeit dazu führen, dass der Kapitän oder unsere Expeditionsleiter sich gezwungen sehen, Aktivitäten abzusagen oder zu unterbrechen oder die Route vollständig zu ändern. Die Stadt Broome im Nordosten der Region Kimberley im äußersten Norden Australiens ist für ihre Geschichte und ihre glorreiche Perlenepoche berühmt. Der faszinierende chinesische Viertel Chinatown, der das historische Zentrum bildet, und der berühmte Friedhof aus dem Jahr 1896 erlauben Reisenden die Vergangenheit der Stadt zu entdecken: am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts und am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts wanderten viele chinesischen und japanischen Arbeitnehmer wegen der blühenden Perlen-Industrie ein. Berühmt ist auch der „Stairway to the moon“, eine optische Illusion, bei der die Spiegelung des Mondlichts bei Ebbe auf den Sandbänken den Eindruck einer Treppe zum Mond erweckt. Ein faszinierendes Naturschauspiel.

Die Lacepedeinseln, ein aus 4 Koralleninseln bestehender Archipel, tragen den Namen eines berühmten französischen Naturforschers, dessen Arbeiten, insbesondere über Fische und Wale, die Wissenschaft im 18. Jahrhundert vorantrieben. Die Inseln bilden ein Naturreservat. Sie sind eine bedeutende Brutstätte der Suppenschildkröte an der Westküste Australiens und beherbergen ebenfalls Vogelkolonien. Ihre Naturführer bringen Sie ganz nahe an die Populationen von Weißbauchtölpeln, Rosenseeschwalben und Brillenpelikanen heran… Sie schließen auch Bekanntschaft mit dem urigen Ruß-Austernfischer, der an seinem ganz schwarzen Körper mit Augen und Schnabel von leuchtend roter Farbe erkennbar ist.

Die nur auf dem Seeweg zugängliche Collier Bay liegt an der felsigen und wüstenartigen Küste einer der abgelegensten Regionen Kimberleys zwischen Archipelen, Lagunen, Klippen und Mangroven. Die Gezeitenphänomene gehören zu den größten der Welt und bilden beim Kommen und Gehen des Wassers ein beeindruckendes Schauspiel: die „horizontalen Wasserfälle“, eine fast 4 Meter hohe Wasserwand zwischen den schmalen Durchgängen der schwindelerregenden Klippen in der Talbot Bay und den spektakulären Wasserfällen um die Gipfel des Montgomery-Riffs, die sich dann aus dem türkisfarbenen Wasser der Bucht erheben. Mit seinen weit ausgedehnten flachen Lagunen, Seegrasböden und riesigen Korallenriffen ist das Montgomery Reef das größte Binnenriff Australiens.
In dieser herrlichen Landschaft befinden Sie sich auf dem Gebiet der Aborigines. Während einer Wanderung entdecken sie in bestimmten Felsvertiefungen wahre Freskengalerien im Freien, die an ihre Mythen über die Entstehung der Welt erinnern.
In dieser Region sind die angebotenen Aktivitäten stark von den Wetter- und Gezeitenbedingungen abhänging. Die Annäherung an die genannten Sehenswürdigkeiten kann leider nicht immer garantiert werden

Der britische Leutnant Phillip Parker King benannte Careening Bay („Kielholbucht“) während seiner dritten Entdeckungs- und Kartierungsreise im Jahr 1820. Sein Schiff HMS Mermaid hatte ein großes Leck, und King suchte nach einer flachen, sandigen Bucht, um das Schiff zu überholen und zu reparieren. An einem heißen Septembernachmittag wurde die Mermaid bei Flut im Sand kielgeholt. Zehn Tage lang führte die Besatzung die Reparaturen durch und machte das Schiff wieder flott. Der Schiffszimmermann schnitzte den Namen des Schiffes und das Datum in den Stamm eines markanten Affenbrotbaums. Als Zeugnis der vergangenen Epoche der Entdeckung gehört der heute 3 Meter breite Baum zum nationalen Erbe.

Prince Frederick Harbour und der Hunter River, zweifellos einer der malerischsten Teile der Kimberley-Küste, sind übersät mit alten Teilen des tropischen Regenwaldes, wilden Mangroven und einem Mosaik aus bis zu 200 Meter hohen Sandsteinfelsen an der Mündung des Flusses. Die Mangrovenwälder, die zu den unberührtesten der Welt gehören, beherbergen viele Vogel- Reptilien- und Amphibienarten, darunter das berühmte Salzwasserkrokodil. Sie entdecken diese einzigartige Umgebung und beobachten die Tierwelt mit unserem Expeditionsteam vom Zodiac aus. Sie können auch ab Naturalist Island Strand Mitchell Falls im Hubschrauber erreichen.

Der Bonaparte-Archipel ist ein Labyrinth aus Inseln, Buchten, Halbinseln und Flüssen von großer Schönheit. Die isolierte geografische Lage hat diesen bemerkenswert unberührten und wilden Ort erhalten, der nur darauf wartet, erkundet zu werden. Der französische Entdecker Nicolas Baudin, der die Küste kartierte und die Inseln im August 1801 während einer großen wissenschaftlichen Expedition entlang der australischen Küste erkundete, gab dem Archipel den Namen des Ersten Konsuls. Nachdem Sie das Festland in Swift Bay erreicht haben, machen Sie einen kurzen Ausflug zu den vielen Höhlen und felsigen Überhängen, die großartige Gemälde des Gwion Gwion und Wandjina Stils bergen.

Reich verzierte menschliche Figuren scheinen auf den Sandsteinwänden unzähliger Galerien zu schweben. Die Schablonenzeichnungen sind oft von schöner violetter Farbe und färben den Felsen dauerhaft; das Alter dieser Gemälde wird auf über 17.000 Jahre geschätzt. Sie gelten als die ältesten detaillierten Darstellungen menschlicher Figuren der Welt und die reiche Palette an Ornamenten, Waffen und Ausstattungen an den Felswänden bietet einen faszinierenden Einblick in eine frühe und äußerst reiche Kultur, deren Erbe sich auf die heutige indigene Kultur in ganz Australien erstreckt.

Die Entdeckung des King George River ist einer der Höhepunkte Ihrer Kreuzfahrt entlang der Küste von Kimberley. Mit dem Zodiac fahren Sie den Fluss hinauf, eingebettet in 80 Meter hohe Schluchten mit wunderbaren wechselnden Farbnuancen von Rot über Rosa und Orange bis Purpur. Die Erosion hat den Felsen im Laufe der Jahrhunderte geformt und am gewundenen Flussverlauf bis zu den spektakulären King George-Zwillingswasserfällen einzigartige Landschaften geschaffen. Die Wasserfälle werden während der Regenzeit gespeist und ihr Durchfluss variiert von Jahr zu Jahr. Die Hauptstadt des Nordterritoriums Darwin erhebt sich am Rande der Timorsee an der australischen Nordküste. Ihre grünen Viertel bieten Ihnen eine tropische und multikulturelle Atmosphäre. Entdecken Sie die noch junge Geschichte der Stadt anhand ihrer bedeutendsten Gebäude, wie dem Parliament House oder dem Admiralty House, die einen tropischen Architekturstil aufweisen.

Today your ship will be anchored in Talbot Bay and our fleet of zodiacs will be exploring Cyclone Creek and the Horizontal falls in Talbot Bay. Due to government regulations, the zodiacs cannot pass through the “Horizontal Falls” regardless of the strength of flow.
Whilst our ships’ zodiacs can show you the falls up close, to experience the thrill of the falls in full tidal movement you will need a larger, faster boat. The local operator has four fast rigid hulled inflatables based at the falls to give you a short thrill ride through the fast-moving waters at the falls. Speed through the gaps in the sandstone walls and experience the foaming rapids up close.
You will be picked up from the Marina Deck by one of the local operator’s boats. These boats are purpose built vessels and have a seating capacity of 12, 24, 26 or 48 guests. The operator determines which vessel they will use for the experience.

The timing and experience are determined on the day by tidal flow. Timings of the fast boat ride may not occur during peak flow of the “Horizontal Falls”. The local operator cannot guarantee to pass through the falls during peak flow or guarantee that each experience will be similar. A good level of mobility and fitness is required to alight the vessel. This activity is not recommended for guests with any back problems.

Today your ship will be anchored in Prince Frederick Harbour and our fleet of zodiac will be exploring the lower reaches of the Hunter River. The Mitchell Falls are on the Mitchell River and the only way to see them is to take the scenic helicopter flight and landing at the falls.
After a short zodiac ride to a wet landing on Naturalist Island you will be given a safety briefing by the helicopter pilot. The pilot will allocate each guest a seat in the helicopter.
After taking off from the beach enjoy a 20-minute flight to the stunning Mitchell Plateau. Your experienced pilots will keep you informed about one of the most scenic and biologically important areas of Western Australia.
You will land next to the falls where you will have approximately fifty minutes to explore the area before your return flight. You will be unaccompanied in a stunning yet rugged and very remote area, with uneven rocky surfaces and little shade from the sun. From the landing site, it is a short 10-minute walk to some great spots to photograph the quadruple drops of Mitchell Falls. You may even have time for a refreshing swim in the river, well above the saltwater crocodile habitats the Kimberley is renowned for.
After your time on the plateau you will have another opportunity to view the vast expanse of the Kimberley region from the air as the skilled pilots take you along a different route for the return 20-minute flight to Naturalists Island.
- A minimum of 12 participants is required to confirm this tour. Helicopter type is determined by the local operator and varies from Jet Ranger (1 seat in front and 3 seats forward-facing in the back) or Long Ranger (1 seat in front and 2 forward facing + 2 rear facing in the back). Helicopter loading and seat position is determined on a weight basis by the pilots. For better photographic opportunities, the rear doors of the helicopters are removed for the flights. A good level of mobility and fitness is required to alight the aircraft and walk around the plateau to view the falls. Fast boat ride through Horizontal Falls
This optional tour must be prebooked at least 90 days prior to your voyage, your shipboard account will be charged automatically. Cancellation made within 21 days are non-refundable. Any reservation made after this deadline will be confirmed on-board based on availability. A minimum of participants must be booked in order to operate this tour.
Today your ship will be anchored in Talbot Bay and our fleet of zodiacs will be exploring Cyclone Creek and the Horizontal falls in Talbot Bay. Due to government regulations, the zodiacs cannot pass through the “Horizontal Falls” regardless of the strength of flow.
Whilst our ships’ zodiacs can show you the falls up close, to experience the thrill of the falls in full tidal movement you will need a larger, faster boat. The local operator has four fast rigid hulled inflatables based at the falls to give you a short thrill ride through the fast-moving waters at the falls. Speed through the gaps in the sandstone walls and experience the foaming rapids up close.
You will be picked up from the Marina Deck by one of the local operator’s boats. These boats are purpose built vessels and have a seating capacity of 12, 24, 26 or 48 guests. The operator determines which vessel they will use for the experience.

This optional tour may clash with the included zodiac tour provided by the ship to the Horizontal Falls in Talbot Bay and Cyclone creek. Tour duration includes boarding and disembarking time. The timing and experience are determined on the day by tidal flow. Timings of the fast boat ride may not occur during peak flow of the “Horizontal Falls”. The local operator cannot guarantee to pass through the falls during peak flow or guarantee that each experience will be similar. A good level of mobility and fitness is required to alight the vessel. This activity is not recommended for guests with any back problems.

Mitchell Falls helicopter flight & landing

Today your ship will be anchored in Prince Frederick Harbour and our fleet of zodiac will be exploring the lower reaches of the Hunter River. The Mitchell Falls are on the Mitchell River and the only way to see them is to take the scenic helicopter flight and landing at the falls.
After a short zodiac ride to a wet landing on Naturalist Island you will be given a safety briefing by the helicopter pilot. The pilot will allocate each guest a seat in the helicopter.
After taking off from the beach enjoy a 20-minute flight to the stunning Mitchell Plateau. Your experienced pilots will keep you informed about one of the most scenic and biologically important areas of Western Australia.
You will land next to the falls where you will have approximately fifty minutes to explore the area before your return flight. You will be unaccompanied in a stunning yet rugged and very remote area, with uneven rocky surfaces and little shade from the sun. From the landing site, it is a short 10-minute walk to some great spots to photograph the quadruple drops of Mitchell Falls. You may even have time for a refreshing swim in the river, well above the saltwater crocodile habitats the Kimberley is renowned for.
After your time on the plateau you will have another opportunity to view the vast expanse of the Kimberley region from the air as the skilled pilots take you along a different route for the return 20-minute flight to Naturalists Island.
- A minimum of 12 participants is required to confirm this tour. Helicopter type is determined by the local operator and varies from Jet Ranger (1 seat in front and 3 seats forward-facing in the back) or Long Ranger (1 seat in front and 2 forward facing + 2 rear facing in the back). Helicopter loading and seat position is determined on a weight basis by the pilots. For better photographic opportunities, the rear doors of the helicopters are removed for the flights. A good level of mobility and fitness is required to alight the aircraft and walk around the plateau to view the falls. You will depart the pier by coach for a panoramic tour of Darwin ending at the airport. Located in Australia's Northern Territory, also known as the "Top End", Darwin is a beautiful tropical city, where over 50 different cultures live and work side by side.
Discover Darwin's rich history and culture and learn about Darwin's role during World War II as you see its many historic wartime landmarks. You will visit on your own the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT), which boasts an impressive collection of indigenous art.
Late morning transfer to the airport in time for check-in for the PONANT selected flight.

UNIQUE GETAWAY IN THE ABORIGINAL COUNTRY (4 NIGHTS)
Set off to discover a region that is as little-known as it is extraordinary during four unforgettable days in the very heart of the bush and the colourful landscapes of Australia’s Northern Territory. In a refined haven, a lodge right in the heart of nature, you will be amazed by the history of this Aboriginal land and the mysteries of preserved nature during a hike, a river cruise or an airboat safari.
Day 1 - Darwin/Bamurru Plains
After disembarkation procedures are completed, you will be greeted at the port by our local representative.
In the morning, you will be transferred to the hotel Hilton Darwin where lunch will be served.
Your guide will be waiting for you in the lobby for your transfer to Darwin Airport and check-in to your flight to Bamurru Plains.
We advise you to bring only one piece of hand luggage (15 kg maximum luggage allowance). Your other luggage will be stored safely at the Hilton Darwin throughout your stay at Bamurru Plains.
During a 30-minute panoramic flight, contemplate the region’s luxuriant scenery and the meandering Adelaide River before landing at the Bamurru Plains private airstrip. From the sky, attempt to identify the black spots that pepper the decor. Buffalos hide behind these moving forms, or crocodiles, if you are lucky…
A guide will welcome you on arrival and accompany you to the Bamurru Plains lodge, a 20-minute journey. Enjoy a Wild Bush Luxury presentation, as well as an aperitif out in the wilderness, before your afternoon activity.
Dinner will provide you with an opportunity to share your first impressions outside the lodge’s open kitchen, which will prepare delicious Australian dishes.
Enjoy an exceptional night in a safari bungalow.
Day 2 - Bamurru Plains
Your day will begin with breakfast in the main lodge, early in the morning.
After a 20-minute journey to the airstrip, you will board your plane for an awe-inspiring 30-minute flight to the small town of Jabiru.
You will journey into the sumptuous Kakadu National Park between flood plains and rocky formations to Ubirr Rock, a 45-minute drive. This is where some of the region’s finest Aboriginal rock art galleries are to be found. The gigantic rocky escarpments that are characteristic of this territory explain the presence of numerous arts of work. Their cavities effectively provided the communities living in Kakadu with perfect shelter for accommodation. No fewer than four settlement periods are illustrated at Ubirr and could date back as far as 50,000 years! Following a path around 1.5 km (0.9 miles) long, you will walk between two cavities decorated with these magnificent paintings before climbing up towards the summit of the rock. Your efforts will be rewarded by an exceptional panorama, a 360° view over the Nadab flood plains. The relatively easy-going climb will be punctuated with photo stops and explanations of the history of the Aboriginal people.
You will be served a bucolic picnic, in the shade, in the bush, with delicious dishes provided by the hotel.
At the start of the afternoon, you will head for the East Alligator River for a cruise along its waters. An Aboriginal guide will share their culture, the local mythology, and their knowledge of the river’s thriving ecosystem. The plants and animals are used traditionally by this community and are integral to various survival techniques. Count the crocodiles lying peacefully on the banks, admire the myriad birds that inhabit the site… It is already time to stop in Arnhem Land, where you will learn more about traditional hunting and gathering tools.
The Bowali Visitor Centre will mark the end of your afternoon. Here you will be given information about this unique environment and will be able to buy local art work, books and gifts.
You will be driven back to Bamurru Plains in time to admire the sunset and have dinner in the main lodge.
This magnificent day will end with a night in a safari bungalow.
Day 3 - Bamurru Plains
A safari in the wilderness of Bamurru Plains is planned for your morning. The airboat ride will give you a unique viewpoint over the surrounding wetlands and enchanting paperbark forests. A guided quad bike adventure also guarantees an original way of exploring the Bamurru territory.
If you wish, your breakfast may be served in an idyllic setting, by the infinity pool that overlooks the flood plains, where agile wallabies roam.
Dive into the pool, discover the region’s history thanks to the lodge’s library or relax in your bungalow during your free time.
A little later, you will be able to go on a safari aboard an open-topped 4-wheel drive vehicle to spot buffalo, wallabies and the many birds of the tropical savannah or on a river cruise on the Sampan Creek, which is part of the Mary River System that forms the western boundary of Bamurru Plains.
The sun will set as you contemplate the local fauna while enjoying your aperitif on the observation platform.
Dinner in the main lodge.
Day 4 - Bamurru Plains/Darwin
The day will begin with a morning safari exploring the private property’s 300 km² (115.8 square miles). Aboard an airboat, marvel at the abundance of wild birds and animals as you move further away from your lodge.
You will be able to freshen up and then it will be time to leave Bamurru Plains: the journey to the airstrip will take 20 minutes.
Board your flight back to Darwin.
Upon arrival at Darwin Airport, you will be transferred to the hotel Hilton Darwin to collect your stored luggage.
After enjoying lunch at the hotel, you will check in your room. The afternoon is at leisure.
Dinner is served at the hotel.
Day 5 - Darwin
After breakfast and check-out, time at leisure depending on your flight schedule.
You will then be transferred to the airport in time for check-in for the PONANT selected flight or any other flight (provided that you have previously communicated your flight schedule to your travel agent).
