Fabien Montcher

Fabien Montcher is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Center for Iberian Studies at Saint Louis University. He works on the history of knowledge and politics with an emphasis on Iberian worlds from the 1400s to 1800s. His research interests connect with questions related to the global history of the Iberian monarchies (Spanish and Portuguese), the history of empires, the history of history, Mediterranean history, art history, and food and environmental history. His research and teaching are informed by sustained and active intellectual engagement with diverse academic and research traditions, critical theory, and empirical enquiries in archives and libraries all around the world. After training as a professional historian in both France and Spain, Fabien moved to the U.S. academia to pursue and expand the range of questions that shape his scholarship. His book, Mercenaries of Knowledge, came out during Fall 2023 with Cambridge University Press. Fabien is currently writing a new monograph on the political history of citrus fruits. His research has been supported by the UCLA Clark Library, the Huntington Library, the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the FLAD Foundation in Lisbon, the Newberry Library, and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton (Sir John Elliott Inaugural Member). As a side note, Fabien cultivates an unquenchable curiosity and enthusiasm for all things wine-related.
