Gautier Capuçon
Gautier Capuçon is one of the most distinguished ambassadors of the cello in the 21st century. Originally from Chambéry, he started playing cello at the age of 4 with Augustin Lefebvre, then in Paris with Annie Cochet-Zakine and Philippe Muller and lastly in Vienna with Heinrich Schiff. He has won numerous prizes and is acclaimed for the expressive intensity of his playing, flamboyant virtuosity and the depth of sound he draws from “Le Ambassadeur”, his beautiful 1701 Matteo Goffriller cello. Exclusive artist at Erato (Warner Music), Gautier Capuçon has an extensive discography and has won numerous awards.
He performs all over the world with the most renowned instrumentalists and conductors, and directed the Classe d'Excellence de Violoncelle in Paris that he established in 2014 until 2021. In January 2022, he launched his own Gautier Capuçon Foundation to support talented musicians aged 18 to 25 at the start of their careers, thereby continuing his commitment to education and transmission.
Keen to explore and expand the cello repertoire, Gautier Capuçon performs a wide range of works every season as well as new pieces. Since autumn 2019, he has been presenting Les Carnets de Gautier Capuçon on Radio Classique every week from 5pm to 6pm. He is a big star in France, appearing on various TV shows and has been a member of the jury on France 2’s prodigies programme (Prodiges) since it launched in 2014. The three annual shows reach over three million viewers every year during the Christmas holidays.
