PONANT invites you to discover sumptuous landscapes and exceptional cities during a 12-day cruise between Portugal and Spain. Be inspired by this unforgettable journey aboard Le Champlain as you visit major cities of the Iberian Peninsula.
Throughout your journey, you will benefit from an excursion included per person per port of call, to choose from a selection offered by PONANT. During this cruise, discover the Sagres fort, near Lagos; attend a cavalcade at a finca in Cartagena; or go to a flamenco show in Cadiz. The diversity of experiences on offer promises you intense and varied moments (to discover the full range of excursions, go to the itinerary tab).
Leaving from the bustling capital of Catalonia, Barcelona, you will sail west to reach the mythical Balearic Islands archipelago. On the preserved island of Menorca, Mahon will charm you with its age-old history and its port, which, at 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) long, is the biggest in the Mediterranean. A little further on, Ibiza, the “White Island” will enchant you with its wild coves and villages of white fincas, a natural beauty that has earned the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In Valencia, a lively city brimming with culture, do not miss the Silk Exchange, a flamboyant Gothic masterpiece listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, illustrating how powerful this mercantile city was in the 15th and 16th centuries.
You will arrive in Cartagena, a former Roman colony where there is still a majestic amphitheatre. As you roam the city, you will discover the many monuments reflecting its numerous influences and rich history.
After a port of call in Motril, at the foot of the Sierra de Lújar, Le Champlain will sail for Malaga, the cultural capital of the Costa del Sol. To the heart of the old town, its history can be read in its buildings, in particular the 10th century castle built by the Moors. You will also have the possibility of strolling through the picturesque town of Ronda and discovering its famous Puente Nuevo. Then, you will discover Cadiz, one of the country’s oldest cities, built on a rock and surrounded by the sea.
Your exploration continues in the Algarve region at the country’s southern tip. Bewitching Lagos stands proud like a fortress in hues of ochre and orange, bordered by the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean. In this town of nature and culture, stroll in the paved small streets of the historic centre whose Moorish and Portuguese influences create a delightful blend. Further north, you will arrive in Lisbon, sitting on the Tagus River, distilling its one-of-a-kind charm imbued with rich history. In Figueira da Foz, at the mouth of the Mondego River, you will love the slow pace of this historic seaside resort and its beaches of white sand.
Your cruise will end in Leixoes, one of Portugal’s largest maritime ports, not far from Porto.

From the pier, embark your coach for the 20-minute drive to the prehistoric settlement of Torralba d’en Salord.
This site dates back to the Talaiotic Period, between 1 000 BC and Roman times. The Taula and its enclosures were used for worship and are the most spectacular remains of the island. Excavations and restoration started in 1973 and is a continuing work for the Balearic Islands Foundation, in conjunction with the University of Madrid. The Taula - which means table - was built from two large slabs of rock, one vertical and the other horizontal, magnificently fashioned to form a “T” shape. The enclosures are horseshoe shaped with side columns.
After your guided visit of the megalithic village, you will return to Mahon, where you will start your guided walking tour.
You will start at the main square and walk downhill back to the harbour, through the city centre. The walk through this attractive town will give you a glimpse of the different periods of the islands’ turbulent history, and of the many architectural styles reflecting the frequent changes of rule. The centre offers an interesting mix of narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses, wide open squares and grand historical buildings.
· This tour involves 3 km (2 miles) of walking on cobblestone streets with some steps. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun.

Pristine nature, rich cultural heritage, a taste for epicureanism and lounging about: Menorca has it all. You can tell by visiting some of the island’s most beautiful sites, from villages to coves, with their stunning views.
A small corner of heaven in the Balearic Islands, for those who like discretion and relaxation, Menorca also has what it takes for fans of beautiful scenery, well-kept traditions and rural architecture. From Arenal d'en Castell, discover the fortresses of Arenal and Addaia, as well as pretty inlets and bucolic little ports like Cala Tirant with its Caribbean appearance, or the fishing village of Fornells.
From Monte Torro, the highest point on the island, you can discover all Menorca. There, the church, the convent, and a statue of the Virgin all watch over the infinite azure, the pine forests and the jagged shorelines that appear in the distance.
The final port of call of your excursion: Subaida. This family farm, renowned for its delicious cheeses and wines, perfectly embodies the epicurean spirit running through the island. Discover how they make them, then enjoy a tasting of local produce, perhaps the best way of understanding Menorca’s immense charm.
· This excursion involves approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) of walking on flat, sometimes cobbled ground. We recommend you wear walking shoes, comfortable clothing and sun cream.

From the pier, you will be taken to the City of Arts & Sciences for a photo stop, a 15-minute drive away. Floating on azure blue water, this futuristic space began taking shape in the 1990s. Surrounded by landscaped gardens and water, the cultural complex covers nearly two kilometres at the eastern end of the Turia Gardens, along what was once the bed of the river of the same name.
You will continue your excursion into the very heart of Valencia to La Plaza de la Reina and the historic centre. There, you will visit the Cathedral built on the site of a Roman temple, which later became an Arab mosque. Its Gothic-style bell tower El Miguelete is one of Valencia's most emblematic monuments.
Then, you will head to the UNESCO World Heritage site, La Lonja de la Seda (silk exchange). This fabulous building was originally used for trading in silk, hence the name, and houses treasures such as the Columnario (or Sala de Contratación), the central dungeon and the Consulado del Mar room.
You will then wander through the Mercado Central, a vast structure of iron, crystal and ceramic tiles built in 1928. The lively market is filled with stalls of sparkling fish, fruits and vegetables from the fertile “huerta” region.
From here, you will reach the Plaza Santa Catalina for a tasting of horchata, the popular local drink made from tiger nuts, before being free to explore the streets of Valencia at your own pace.
· This excursion involves 2.2 miles (3.5 km) of walking, including stairs and uneven ground. We advise you to wear comfortable shoes and to protect yourself from the sun. Appropriate clothing is required when visiting religious sites (shoulders and knees should be covered). The horchata tasting session is included.

Depart from the pier towards the Albufera National Park.
The Albufera (small sea) is a freshwater lagoon and estuary on the Gulf of Valencia coast. It is the main portion of the park, with a surface area of 21,120 hectares (52,200 acres). The natural biodiversity of the nature reserve allows a great variety of fauna and flora to thrive and be observed year-round. While once a saltwater lagoon, dilution due to irrigation and canals draining into the estuary, converted it to freshwater by the seventeenth century.
The park is bordered by a pine forest that extends down to the sea. This beautiful nature reserve, surrounded by rice fields is also home to Spain’s largest lake, a paradise for migratory birds and one of Europe’s most important sites for nesting birds. You will explore these marshes on a traditional boat belonging to local fishermen. At the end of the 45-minute ride, the boat will moor close to a typical restaurant, where you will enjoy a snack and refreshment.
Re board your coach and drive back to your ship.
· This tour involves approximately 1 mile (1,5 km) of walking on uneven and cobblestones terrain with some steps. Participants should be able to get on and off the boat (stairs). We recommend you to wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. This tour is subject to weather conditions. In case of bad weather, tour will be cancelled as the boat ride is not possible. Guests participating in this tour should be able to get on and off the boat (stairs).

This excursion is the best way to immerse yourself in the ancient Roman city “Carthagonova” and discover the different aspects of the inhabitants’ daily life at that time.
From the pier, meet your guide and start your walking tour of the heart of Cartagena, a city proud of its millennial past, above all the famous Second Punic War: the confrontation between the Carthaginians and Romans.
Start your tour visiting the Roman theatre, one of the most emblematic monuments of Cartagena. This theatre played an important role at the time of Ancient Rome and had a capacity for 6.000 people.
Continue to the Conception castle (outside visit only), boarding a panoramic lift to the roof terrace, an integral part of lovely Torres Park, located on one of the city’s five defensive hills, offering breath-taking city views.

From the pier, board your coach and start your 2-hour scenic drive to the city of Granada which is lying at approximately 2,100 feet (650 m) above sea level, in the shadow of the mighty Sierra Nevada. The Moors stormed across the Strait of Gibraltar in the 8th century, and they were not driven out of Granada until 1492. During the intervening centuries, they brought a refined civilisation to the south of Spain; Granada, and particularly the Alhambra, represent the zenith of Moorish culture in this country.
On arrival, you will discover the old Albayzin Quarter, part of the UNESCO world heritage, from where you will enjoy a splendid view over to the Sierra Nevada, the Darro Valley, and the Alhambra itself.
After an early tapas dinner, enjoy an exclusive visit of the Alhambra by night.
The Nazrid Palace, named after the last dynasty of Sultans which made important reformations, is one of the finest examples of Islamic Art. Although damaged and restored over the centuries, it is not difficult to picture the place as it was in all its glory 600 years ago. The ceilings drip with stalactites in stucco, and each room appears more richly decorated than the previous one. Marvel at the delicate marble columns, graceful arcades and fine craftsmanship in the Sultans' "paradise on earth". The Hall of the Ambassadors and the Court of the Lions are considered as the gems of this oriental jewel box. From its windows you can look back across to the old quarter of Albayzin and the gypsy haunts of Sacromonte.
Finally, you will return to your coach for a 2-hour transfer back to your ship.
